ITV’s new drama Out There was filmed entirely in Wales at Cardiff’s Dragon Studios, Llandovery Market Square, Egwysilan Church, Newport Station, Llangattock, Llyswen, Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, Twyn Yr Hydd House and Cardiff Bay.
Available on ITV1 and ITVX from Friday 19th January 2025, the series follows Nathan Williams (Martin Clunes), a farmer who realises his son Johnny (Louis Ashbourne Serkis) and his friends have got mixed up in county lines drug dealing.
Nathan gets his brother, Caleb (Mark Lewis Jones), on his side as the problem spirals out of control. But can they keep their involvement hidden with PC Jane Crowther (Eiry Thomas) determined to prove herself?
Out There Filming Locations
Out There filming locations include the Black Mountains, Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, Port Talbot’s Margam Country Park, Llandovery in Carmarthenshire, Newport, Cardiff Bay, and Egwysilan in Caerphilly.
It was filmed exclusively in Wales, including the studio scenes, which were shot at Dragon Studios in Cardiff.
And you can see everything from rolling hills to village squares and city centre locations as Nathan Williams finds himself embroiled the world of county lines.
These are the exact filming locations to look out for in the Martin Clunes series.
Out There Locations List
Farmhouses
And Wales Online shared Out There’s farmhouse locations, pointing out Llangattock and Llyswen. Llangattock is in the Usk Valley, across the River Usk from its closest town, Crickhowell.
Llyswen is situated on the banks of the River Wye, in the Bronllys community, both within Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (sometimes known as the Brecon Beacons National Park).
They’re about half an hour’s drive apart, to the south east and north east of Brecon.
The Hills
Out There’s hillside scenes were filmed in the Black Mountains in Wales, and elsewhere in the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park.
The Black Mountains reach across Powys and Monmouthshire, with the highest mountain reaching up to 811 metres.
Town Square
The town square filming location in ITV’s Out There is the Market Square in Llandovery, Carmarthenshire.
It’s easily recognisable onscreen as the traditional rural square surrounded by brightly painted period buildings.
Like many of the real Welsh filming locations that appear in the Martin Clunes county lines drama, Llandovery is on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. However, this village location is on its western edge, rather than the north east.
High Street
Llandover High Street appears in some of the village scenes in Out There.
Look out for it in the earlier episodes in particular, including when Nathan drives down the high street as he starts to find out the truth.
Raglan Castle Hotel
Twyn Yr Hydd House is located within Margam Country Park in Port Talbot. You may have seen it onscreen before – the park is a Doctor Who filming location that appears in The Pandorica Opens, The Sontaran Strategem and The Beast Below.
But the park’s most famous property is the larger, Grade I-listed Gothic mansion. The Talbot family built the imposing Margam Castle in 1830 as the centrepiece of the estate.
The property that appears as Raglan Castle Hotel in Out There is Twyn Yr Hydd House.
It was built for Edward Knox, Emily Charlotte Talbot’s agent, in 1892. After the Second World War, the castle’s inhabitants moved into this smaller house.
It’s not open to the public, but much of the rest of the park is available to explore.
Village Train Station
The village train station location in Out There is Llandovery Railway Station on the Heart of Wales Line.
In the 6-part county lines drama, the kids catch the train to explain the missing drugs to their dealer in the city. The journey from Llandovery to Newport would need a change and could take about 3 hours.
Newport Train Station
The city centre railway station in Out There is Newport Railway Station on Queensway in Newport city centre.
Completed in 1850 with the new station building added in 2010, Newport is the second-busiest train station in Wales.
Pacific Beauty
Out There’s Pacific Beauty location is on Bridge Street in Newport, but the shop’s signage isn’t there in reality.
Look out for some local shops and businesses as Johnny enters before walking through to Kenny’s office in the back.
The Church
Out There’s funeral scenes were filmed at St Ilan’s Parish Church in Eglwysilan near Abertridwr, in Caerphilly.
Egwysilan Church was used as an active church building until recently, but closed after a final Christmas Carol service in December 2023. It’s got a very long history, and is actually situated on an old pilgrimage route, which leads between Llantarnam and Penrhys.
The Rose Pub
The real Rose pub location from Out There is The Sultan, at The Big Windsor on Stuart Place in Cardiff.
In the 2025 Martin Clunes series, Nathan meets at contact at The Rose in Episode 6. But in reality, The Sultan is a Turkish Mediterranean restaurant housed in an elegant Grade II-listed building alongside Cardiff Bay.
The Castle
Out There’s castle ruins location is Llandovery Castle on Castle Street, Llandovery.
Built in the 12th Century, the castle towers over the Tywi Valley from its position between the Afon Bran and Afon Gwydderig.
And of course, as well as the two rivers, there’s stunning scenery all around. Llandovery Castle’s medieval ruins offer views across the western border of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park.
