When songwriter Dave (Jason Lee) falls victim to a billboard-related accident, his chipmunk charges, Alvin, Simon and Theodore (voiced by Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler and Jesse McCartney), are sent to LA to stay with his Aunt Jackie (Kathryn Joosten) and her son Toby (Zachary Levi).

The lovable critters are hugely popular with everyone at school, save for a group of jealous, bullying jocks.Things begin to look up, however, when Principal Rubin (Wendie Malick) asks the talented trio to represent the school in a Battle of the Bands contest. They eagerly agree, unaware that their devious former manager Ian Hawke (David Cross) is sending in his newest finds - female chipmunk threesome The Chipettes - to compete.

Adorable rodent relations Alvin, Simon and Theodore have been around in some form or another for the past 50 years, and this lively sequel - sorry - squeakquel's, huge box office success is proof of their enduring popularity. In a colourful mixture of live action and animation, small screen stars Cross, Levi and Lee feature in the flesh, while top comedy actresses Amy Poehler, Anna Faris and Christina Applegate voice feisty female furballs The Chipettes.

The chaotic high-pitched antics are best left to the very young who'll adore the slapstick silliness, but there are a few of the obligatory pop culture references for older viewers, including Beyoncé's ubiquitous Single Ladies routine getting 'munked to the max.
