The Union was filmed at the Savoia Excelsior Palace Trieste, Shorty’s Bar, Wittpenn Bridge, The Savoy, St Martin’s Lane, Gladstone Arms, Theatre Royal Windsor, Fitzroy Square, Tower Bridge, Bay Leaf Café, Punta Lighthouse, Pula Airport and more.
In the action thriller, secret agent Roxanne (Halle Berry) rekindles her connection with former flame Mike McKenna (Mark Wahlberg) after a 25-year break.
But she actually wants to recruit her former high school sweetheart for a mission with her team, The Union. Can he catch up with the sort of skills her fellow agents Nick Faraday (Mike Colter) and Tom Brennan (J K Simmons) have mastered?
We’ll find out as they drive straight in, crossing London, Slovenia, Italy and Croatia in the process.
The Union 2024 Filming Locations
Netflix’s 2024 spy thriller, The Union filming locations include Italy, Jersey City and Bayonne in New Jersey, Pula and Rakalj in Croatia, Piran in Slovenia, and Stansted, Covent Garden, Fitzrovia, Borough and the City of London.
Here are all the locations from The Union, including a street-by-street deep dive into the London locations. Any we missed? Let us know if you spotted a local landmark we didn’t catch!
The Union Locations
Trieste, Italy
The Union’s Trieste scenes were filmed on location in the real Trieste. In the Netflix movie’s opening lines, they mention the storm coming in over the Adriatic. That’s pretty accurate, because it’s an Italian post city on the Bay of Trieste, part of the Adriatic Sea.
Grand Hotel Castelletto
The Grand Hotel Castelletto filming location in The Union is the Savoia Excelsior Palace Trieste on riva del Mandracchio. The movie’s Grand Hotel Castellatto location is a grand 19th Century building in a historic centre of Trieste. It also boasts a stunning waterfront location, which we see more of in the next scenes.
Via Roma
Look out for the real Via Roma – it’s The Union’s canal location. Nick Faraday (Mike Colter) is seen getting the asset to the extraction point here during the shoot-out.
New Jersey
The Union’s New Jersey scenes use a mixture of real locations and CGI mashups. New Jersey 101.5 identified many of the Garden State filming locations seen in The Union including Port Kearney Security and Bridgeview Diner on Hackensack Avenue, Kearney; West Hudson Park in Harrison; and Roots Steakhouse in Morristown.
PATH Lift Bridge
The New Jersey bridge seen in Netflix’s The Union is the PATH Lift Bridge, used for the rapid transit Port Authority Trans-Hudson line from Newark to Manhattan’s World Trade Center. Built in 1900 by the Pennsylvania Railroad, the bridge takes the line across the Hackensack River between Kearny and Jersey City, NJ.
Wittpenn Bridge
Mike McKenna (Mark Wahlberg) is seen working on the Wittpenn Bridge, a New Jersey construction project that’s just come to an end after 10 years. It crosses the Hackensack River which runs between Jersey City and Kearny, and was built to replace the original 1930s-era crossing.
Wilson’s Bar
The real Wilson’s location in The Union is Shorty’s, Bayonne, NJ. The neighbourhood bar confirmed that it’s the same bar seen in the 2024 Mark Wahlberg movie, and local news covered the shoot too.
Back in July 2022, locals turned up to see Wahlberg on location while the movie was operating under the working title, Our Man from Jersey. Located at the corner of W 12th Street and Broadway in Bayonne, New Jersey, the usual black and red signage was hidden by a blue awning for The Union’s filming.
Leonard Gordon Park
The New Jersey park location where Roxanne drugs Mike is Leonard Gordon Park on Manhattan Ave and Kennedy Blvd, Jersey City. This hilly park is in The Heights, a short distance from Journal Square and the Wittpenn Bridge.
The Savoy
Mike and Roxanne’s London hotel location in The Union is The Savoy, near Trafalgar Square. London’s first purpose-built luxury hotel was the project of Richard D’Oyly Carte, a famous figure on the theatre scene. He wanted to bring the deluxe features of the latest American hotels to his home city, and achieved his dream when The Savoy opened its doors in 1889.
The Strand
Mike leaves The Savoy and gets into Tom Brennan’s car, before driving (badly) down the Strand. In the following sequence, he attempts to drive on right side of the road before taking Roxanne’s directions to drive on the left.
Whitfield Street
Mike, Roxanne and Tom discuss the programme as the walk along Whitfield Street, before turning the corner onto Tottenham Street.
Bay Leaf Café
We think the London café location in Netflix’s The Union is the Bay Leaf Café at 19 Tottenham Street in London’s Fitzrovia. It’s a real café serving all the British classics you’d expect, though in the movie, one traditional element comes as a surprise. In the scene, Roxanne confidently orders rolls and coffee, with Tom and Mike being perplexed by the brown sauce.
Fitzroy Square
Roxanne and Tom lead Mike through a Fitzrovia square as they finish their takeaways – this London filming location is Fitzroy Square. It also appears after Mike’s first visit to the team’s headquarters.
Look closely at the gardens in the heart of Fitzroy Square during its second appearance and you can see Naomi Blake’s sculpture, The View. It’s one of several sculptures created by the Holocaust survivor that are on display around London.
BT Tower
Roxanne’s London HQ location is the BT Tower, the 177-metre tower that was once the tallest building in the Capital. Completed in 1965 and first used as the Post Office Tower, it once featured a viewing platform and revolving restaurant on top of tis main purpose in telecommunications.
You might soon get the chance to stay at the famous spot, as it’s set to become a boutique hotel.
Tower Bridge
You don’t have to be a local to spot Tower Bridge in The Union, appearing in Mike and Roxanne’s training sequence.
But is this iconic London landmark the best place for secret agents to hang out?
It’s certainly not subtle, anyway. This favourite film location also appears in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Killing Eve’s finale shows it from the opposite side of the river, and the list goes on…
Tower Hotel
Roxanne trains Mike on top of the Tower Hotel, St Katherine’s Way, beside Tower Bridge and the Tower of London in Tower Hamlets. Of course, there’s quite a bit of CGI going on here. Not only have spy and spy-in-training been added to the top of the building, one end of the block has been removed.
We’re guessing this is to give clearer views of that unique location.
Seven Dials
Mike prepares for his first mission in a van in Seven Dials, towards the north of Covent Garden. As he steps out into this London location, he nearly forgets his $5 million dollars. You can easily see the Cambridge Theatre, current home of Matilda, in the background. It’s at the end of Earlham Street.
Gladstone Arms
Mike is seen on Lant Street before entering a pub location, the Gladstone Arms. The Union’s London pub location isn’t really in Covent Garden though – it’s south of the River Thames, in Borough.
Named for William Gladstone, the former Prime Minister, the Gladstone Arms dates back to the 19th Century. It’s even mentioned in Charles Dickens’ The Pickwick Papers!
There’s actually a bit of CGI going on here. The street at the junction is really there, but the buildings in between have been edited. Look out for another London location coming up in the Covent Garden chase sequence, before we return to the real deal.
14 Hanway Street
Moving from E1 to W1, we’re back in Fitzrovia! The van chasing Mike through London is seen on Hanway Street, just behind Tottenham Court Road. It’s a hidden street of 18th and 19th Century buildings, with a bit of a Soho vibe thanks to its location close to Oxford Street.
Cambridge Theatre
The real Matilda theatre is the Cambridge Theatre at the heart of Seven Dials, but in The Union there are multiple theatre filming locations. The theatre auditorium location is the Theatre Royal Windsor, an Edwardian theatre just outside London.
It’s a popular location for theatre productions to test the waters before transferring to the West End.
And there’s another theatre location in the Netflix movie too. After Mike weaves his way through the Theatre Royal Windsor, he exits by the stage door onto Tower Court.
The Union’s stage door location actually belongs to the St Martin’s Theatre, home of the world’s longest-running play, Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap. The show has famously never been filmed, but the theatre featured heavily in the 2022 murder mystery, See How They Run.
Tower Court
Mike continues along Tower Court in Seven Dials after running from the theatre, before stepping out into Monmouth Street. These locations are back in the real Covent Garden. From here, he enters an alleyway though a red door near 45 Monmouth Street, before the apartment fight.
St Pancras Renaissance Hotel London
More gorgeous London locations in The Union appear when Mike and Roxanne go to the safehouse around St Pancras Station and the St Pancras Hotel.
The train station and Eurostar terminus is housed underneath the grand hotel, which originally opened in 1873, but closed to guests in 1935. Used as offices for years, it reopened its doors as an apartment and hotel room complex in 2011 after a lengthy refurbishment.
Queensway Underground Station
Queensway Tube station in The Union is really Bank Station. Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg’s scenes were filmed on Bank Station’s Waterloo and City Line platform.
The Auction
The Union’s safehouse location is near Princes Street in the City of London. Mike and Roxanne on Lothbury and onto Princes Street before passing the Bank of England.
Carlton House Terrace
Mike gets out of the car on Carlton House Terrace, a smart address in St James’s that’s appeared in The Crown and Good Omens. The nighttime scene doesn’t reveal it all, but this terrace opens out onto Pall Mall at one end and The Mall on the other.
Albert Bridge
London’s Albert Bridge is seen and mentioned in The Union’s London scenes. Built between 1870 and 1873, the Grade II-listed landmark is one of the oldest suspension bridges in London. The popular filming location links Chelsea on the north bank of the Thames with Battersea to the south.
It’s not hard to see why, with appealing old and new views of the city on all sides. The leafy green area you can see behind Roxanne in the scenes is the much-loved Battersea Park.
Kensington Gore
The winding red-brick London mansion blocks shown in The Union’s London scenes are located in Kensington Gore. Look out for a nice view across the distinctive 1870s buildings after the crucial meeting on the Albert Bridge.
Royal Albert Hall
Did you recognise the Royal Albert Hall behind Roxanne and Mike as they plan their next move? The Royal Albert Hall was completed in 1870 and opened by Queen Victoria in 1871, and has hosted concerts, theatre productions and more ever since.
It’s one of the permanent venues that was planned during the Great Exhibition in 1851. After standing outside, Mike and Roxanne approach another of the The Union’s London locations, Kensington Gardens.
Albert Memorial
The imposing monument that Mike and Roxanne walk towards from the Royal Albert Hall is the Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens. Commissioned by Queen Victoria after the death of her beloved husband, the monument’s official title is the Prince Consort National Memorial, and it’s got close links to the area.
Kensington’s world famous museums took over their sites in the area after Prince Albert organised the Great Exhibition on what’s now Exhibition Road in 1851. Along with his interests in the wider world and the arts, the Albert Memorial celebrates his involvement in the project that transformed Kensington.
It's another popular screen favourite, with its history making it ideal for everything from modern day thrillers to Downton Abbey. And of course, it’s next door to the famous King’s Cross Station as well.
Stansted Airport
The London airport Roxanne and Mike fly out of is Stansted in Essex. Recently seen in TV thrillers The Capture and Red Eye, Stansted’s regular carriers and runway are seen as The Union’s high school sweethearts catch a flight to Istria in Croatia.
Croatia
Netflix sent Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry to several Croatian filming location for The Union. Scenes were filmed at tahe seafront and old town of Rovinj, Pula Airport, Marcana, Rakalj and Kanfanar’s Dvigrad, as reported in Variety back in 2022.
Pula Airport
The Croatian airport location in the Union is Pula Airport at the southern end of the Istria Peninsula.
Bringing us back the start of the movie, it’s just an hour and a half’s drive away from Trieste, over the Slovenian and Italian borders. Once a military airport, it was redeployed to civilian work in 1967.
20 years later, the new terminal gave it extra capacity for holidaymakers. And it’s not hard to see why the area attracts visitors.
As seen in The Union, this airport location looks out across the Adriatic Sea and it’s surrounded by beautiful scenery. For instance, just off the coast, the Brijuni National Park spans a group of islands. Some are very isolated, while others let visitors explore the landscape and see real dinosaur footprints.
Pula
Watch the Netflix movie’s Croatian shots carefully to catch the historic port of Pula. It’s hard to beat for ancient ambience, with a network of old winding streets and even a 2,000-year-old arena.
It’s one of just 6 surviving Roman amphitheatres in the world, and the only one to survive with all four towers intact.
Luka Bay
Filming for the Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry movie also took place around Croatia’s Luka Bay. The idyllic coastal spot is known for its quiet sandy beaches and blue waters. Nearby, the ruins of the Church of St Agnes and an 11th Century castle have survived in the old town of Rakalj.
Scenes were also shot on the Stjepan Hauser walking trail which begins at the old village.
Dvigrad
Look out for the medieval town of Dvigrad in Kanfanar in the spy movie, now a partially ruined series of towers and city walls. Dvigrad is made up of two distinct areas, Moncastel and Parentin, which united over a thousand years ago.
The oldest recorded mention of Dvigrad was in 879, and while the town lasted for centuries, they were turbulent ones. By 1630, after weathering attacks and plague outbreaks, the last citizens moved away, leaving the ruins to rise out of the forest.
Slovenia
Look out for multiple Slovenian filming locations in The Union, with Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg filming around Piran’s harbour and historic streets.
The Slovenia reported on the shoot in 2022, when filming was scheduled for the coastal Prešeren Embankment, narrow Trubar Street, Gregorčičeva Street and Bolniška Street, Tartini Square, and Dantejeva Street.
The action-packed location shoot took place in between September and October 2022, bringing local crew members and extras onto the team. In fact, it became the largest-scale film project to come to Slovenia so far.
And how about Piran itself? If you got a chance to admire the scenery during the fast-paced chase sequences, you’ll have noticed its stunning coastline and historic architecture.
It’s also just 35 miles away from Trieste, seen earlier in the movie. Piran’s history has been closely linked with Italy for centuries – once part of the Roman Empire, it was part of the Venetian Republic from 1283 until 1797.
Here are some of the Slovenian locations to look out for in the 2024 spy thriller.
Punta Lighthouse
One of The Union’s Slovenian locations is the Punta Lighthouse and Church of St Clement in Piran. The lighthouse at the point of the harbour is built into the tower of the 13th Century church, just one of the town’s medieval buildings.
It’s at the furthest point of the land, looking out across the Adriatic Sea’s Gulf of Piran.
Tartini Square
The tranquil Mediterranean square filming location in Netflix’s The Union is Tartini Square, on the edge of Piran’s old town. Every side of the square is lined with historic buildings housing bars and restaurants, apart from an open space leading onto Piran Port.
Though of course, there’s not much time for Halle Berry or Mark Wahlberg’s characters to enjoy the view. The chase soon causes chaos, as the duo dash through the old town’s streets.
